Obituary for Mrs. Margaret Marie Wilkie (Fischer)
With sadness for the loss and gratitude for the life, we announce the passing of Margaret Marie Wilkie (nee Fischer) in Thunder Bay, Ontario on January 4, 2023.
Margaret was born in Hannibal, Missouri on May 12, 1934, the youngest of 4 children to Martha and John Fischer. She grew up in rural Missouri, her father being a Lutheran minister and her mother, a nurse. She moved to St Louis, Missouri in her 20’s where she met her husband of 56 years, Clark Wilkie, who would also become a Lutheran minister. They were married on June 23, 1963, the start of a wonderful life together. A year after their wedding, they moved to Atikokan and then, in 1967, to Thunder Bay where they raised their three (3) children. After spending several winters in British Columbia visiting their daughter, Margaret and Clark moved to Victoria in 2012 to take advantage of the warmer climate. Margaret spent her final weeks in Thunder Bay at the St Joseph’s Hospice, where she received excellent care.
Margaret loved her family dearly, and spending time together at their camp on One Island Lake was very special to her. She remained active throughout her life, curling, walking, gardening, enjoying the outdoors. When her children were school-aged, she worked as a bookkeeper, tax preparer, and volunteer for the cancer society. After retirement, Margaret and Clark enjoyed travelling and trekked across Canada several times over the years. Marge was an excellent cook and could whip up something delicious on a moment’s notice, recipe or not. She especially loved ice cream and dessert – with every meal.
Margaret is predeceased by her beloved husband, Clark (2020), daughter Maria (2017), her parents, sister Marian, and brother John.
She is survived by her older brother William “Bill”, sons Timothy and Matthew (Meesh), son- in-law Kevin Couture, granddaughter Samantha Hager (Austin), great-grandson Lyndon, and grandson James Wilkie (Miranda.)
Funeral services for the late Mrs. Margaret Wilkie will be held on Friday, January 13, 2023 at 2:00pm in Christ Lutheran Church, 47 Walkover Street, with the Rev. Brian Falkenholt officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Everest Funeral Chapel, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.
