Obituary for Mrs. Mary Clare Marguerite Gagnon (Armstrong)

On the 5th day of November 2022, Mary Clare Marguerite Gagnon (nee Armstrong) passed away peacefully at Pioneer Ridge Home for the Aged, her home for 5 & 1/2 years.

Mary was born in Fort William on March 10, 1929 to Wilmer and Pearl Armstrong. She had two siblings: Loretta Lalonde (deceased) and Robert Armstrong of Arizona.

One of her early accomplishments was playing drums and travelling with the Fort William Girl’s Pipe Band. Music brought joy to her throughout her life.

In 1956 she married Wilf Gagnon and raised four daughters, Marguerite, Terry, Barb and Laurie.

Home and family were her main focus, balanced with her faith and many interests such as bingo, golf, curling and choral groups to name a few. She also did bookkeeping for the family plumbing business, Wilf’s Plumbing Service.

She was a founding member of Corpus Christi parish, a member of the CWL for over 60 years, and sang in the senior choir. Other affiliations included The Strathcona Ladies Golf Club and Birdie Gang, the Port Arthur Curling Club, The Saints singing group, the Interlink choir, and the St Joseph’s Care Group Auxiliary. She also enjoyed her time as a Brownie leader.

Mary was known for her beautiful smile and her ready sense of humour. Children were especially dear to her. It was her pleasure to share her love of music, reading and playing games.

She is survived by her brother Robert Armstrong (Judy); daughters Marguerite Gagnon, Terry Marcon (Dave), Barb McFarlane (Bob) and Laurie Thibodeau (Carl). She was blessed with three grandchildren, Andréa McDonald (David), Riley (Jess) and Sarah McFarlane, as well as two great-grandchildren, Finn and Stella McDonald as well as numerous nieces, nephews and dear friend Joan Chandler.

She was predeceased by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Wilf, and her sister Loretta.

We would like to recognize and thank the Pioneer Ridge staff for their exceptional love and care of our mother.

Funeral services for the late Mrs. Mary Gagnon will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2022 with family and friends gathering in Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church for the Funeral Mass at 10:00am celebrated by Fr. Victor Degagne. Private interment will follow in St Andrew’s Cemetery.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma.

If friends desire, donations to the Pioneer Ridge Butterfly Garden would be gratefully accepted.

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”
