Obituary for Mrs. Amelia "Amy" Madeline Shubat (Domineck)
Amelia (Amy) Madeline Shubat
August 17, 1928 - November 3, 2022
Amy died at Roseview Manor, in her 94th year. Born in Port Arthur to Zorka (Zamic) and Michael Domineck, her family was part of the vibrant Croatian community. Her young life was filled with family, church and the Croatian hall where she played in the tamburitza orchestra. As a child, Amy loved having fun, even escaping some of her chores to play in her Tupper street neighbourhood. Always a lifelong learner, she graduated from the Port Arthur Business College and shortly after got her first secretarial job at CIL and then Powell Equipment.
Amy first laid eyes on the handsome Bill Shubat at the Croatian hall. After a long romance they married on June 4,1955 and over a decade their surprisingly large family grew to five children. Life was hectic, centred around expanding extended families, church, and plenty of social gatherings. Never one to rest, Amy was always a student, taking many courses in sewing, college English, aquabics, Tai Chi etc. She was an accomplished seamstress and the girls were often the beneficiaries of her creations.
Always willing to give back to her community, Amy volunteered at the Croatian Hall, St Andrew’s RC church (CWL, eucharistic minister) and canvassed for many charities. In 2008 Amy proudly received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award for her dedicated work with Meals on Wheels.
Once her youngest two boys were in school Amy returned to work as a secretary at St. Pius X. For 18 years she provided exemplary service to staff and students.
Bill and Amy shared a 60 year life together, deeply committed to family and friends. Holidays and special events always included our ‘grannies’ and the Peloza and Domineck families. Amy was always the consummate host; an incredible cook and baker. Many friends and neighbours,as well as the ‘Motley Crew', were the focal point of their social calendar. They loved to travel, especially to visit their children and grandchildren and took trips across Canada, US, and Europe.
She was predeceased by her parents, husband Bill (2015), sister Nellie (1956), brothers Al (November 3rd,1986) and John (2005), and nephew Michael Domineck (November 3rd, 2022 ). Her loving children are Debbie (Greg), Valerie (Gary), Michael (Debbie), Robert, James (Els); and grandchildren Nicholas, Brad (Charleen), Matthew, Caliegh (Gabe), Morgan (Tim), Rebecca (Tim), Daniel and Luka. She will also be missed by Milly and John Peloza, Jackie Domineck and their families.
In spite of her dementia, Amy retained her sense of humour, pragmatism, and friendly, loving demeanor. Thanks to staff at Jasper Place and Roseview and the cadre of caregivers who provided so much enrichment and support to Amy. We especially acknowledge the loving care provided by her granddaughter Morgan, son Robert, daughter Debbie and caregiver Jean Kruchak.
Funeral Services for the late Mrs. Amy Shubat will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at 10:00am in the EVEREST FUNERAL CHAPEL, 299 Waverley Street at Algoma. A private interment will follow in the family plot at St. Andrew's Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time. For those unable to attend, a video recording of the service will be available on the Everest of Thunder Bay website.
In lieu of flowers, donations to a local charity (Alzheimer Society, Hospice Northwest) would be appreciated by the family.
