Obituary for Mrs. Chris Kathe Wreszczak (Metzner)

Chris Wreszczak
April 27, 1949 - June 13, 2022

The family of Chris Wreszczak (nee Metzner)is heartbroken to announce her passing, at the age of 73, on June 13th, 2022. Chris passed away at the Thunder Bay Regional Hospital with her family by her side.

Chris was born in Berlin, Germany on April 27th 1949. She and her family immigrated to Canada when she was 7 years old.

After graduating from Westgate High School Chris met the love of her life, John Wreszczak, at a friend's wedding. In 1969, Chris and John were married - a marriage that would last for 50 years. In 2019, John and Chris were able to celebrate their 50th anniversary with their family and grandchildren present.

Chris worked at Lakehead University as an Administrative Assistant. She worked in many different areas of the university including the Registrar's and Liaison Offices and in the Kinesiology Department where she remained until her retirement. She and her husband, John, decided to retire early so that they could pursue their shared passion for travel and volunteer work. They dedicated much of their time volunteering for such organizations as Red Cross, Canadian Cancer Society, Thunder Bay Museum, RFDA and the National Trust Great Britain. Their most recent volunteer work was with New Life for Old Bags - using old plastic shopping bags to make mats for the homeless, and facilitating workshops to share this skill.

Chris was a gentle, caring and generous person and an avid gardener. She understood quite well that her gardens weren't just for aesthetic beauty or produce, but the garden was also a conduit through which she could help the environment. She and John dedicated many parts of their large gardens to pollinator-friendly patches to help bees and monarch butterflies. Chris would always grow plenty of milkweed and share seeds and plants with anyone who had interest in the monarchs.

Chris was predeceased by her beloved husband John, and by her sisters Gloria and Monika. She will be greatly missed by her children: Victoria (Bruce, Madison, Lauren); Jennifer (Robert, Elora); Matthew (Anna, Kaitlyn (Luke, Sunday), Kennedy, Katerina and Justin). She is survived by her mother, Kathe, and her sisters Renate, Shirley and Sylvia and her brother Rick, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of her life will take place on Sunday, June 26th at 1pm at the Victoria Inn. There will be access to a microphone so that memories of Chris can be shared.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations can be made to the RFDA or the Thunder Bay Public Library. Arrangements have been entrusted to Simpler Times Cremation Centre, 575 Central Avenue, Thunder Bay.
